ADAMS Athlete Whereabouts

ADAMS – British Athletes to benefit from new Whereabouts Application

British sportsmen and women will be amongst the first in the world to benefit from a new system for recording whereabouts information which has been developed by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA). The whereabouts function of ADAMS (Anti-Doping Administration and Management System) is being rolled out in the UK from August, with UK Sport becoming the first Anti-Doping Organisation to adopt its full functionality.

ADAMS is a global clearinghouse for all anti-doping information, and is already being used by UK Sport internally to manage Therapeutic Use Exemptions (TUEs), testing and results functions. UK Sport have been heavily involved in the development of ADAMS, and with their role on the ADAMS User Group, have ensured an athlete-friendly whereabouts system has been put in place, catering for the needs of British athletes.

All sports currently using the UK Sport’s online Athlete Whereabouts System or who are submitting whereabouts information via a different method will be inducted onto ADAMS by the end of the year.  UK Sport has also identified a number of other sports requiring an out-of-competition testing programme and they will be notified of their induction onto ADAMS in due course. UK Sport’s Drug-Free Sport Directorate have been working hard to plan the implementation of ADAMS for both athletes and sports, and is committed to providing quality inductions and thorough education and support for all. The implementation plan includes:

  • Inductions of National Governing Body (NGB) representatives onto ADAMS
  • Face to face ADAMS inductions offered to all athletes
  • Promotional and instructional DVD on out-of-competition testing, providing athlete whereabouts and using ADAMS
  • New resources and merchandise to assist athletes in the provision of athlete whereabouts
  • An Athlete Whereabouts Campaign for athletes – using 100% ME ambassadors and other ambassadors within sport

In addition a range of UK Sport run support mechanisms are in place, including a free-phone athlete whereabouts line, text and email message services, a dedicated member of staff for athlete whereabouts, a support pack and a range of written resources.

The transition to ADAMS is a significant and positive step forward for UK Sport, NGBs and most importantly the athletes. Athletes will only have to provide one set of whereabouts accessible to the relevant organisations (NGB, International Federation, WADA , UK Sport). Furthermore, as ADAMS is a global system, testing programmes around the world will be better co-ordinated, therefore giving greater confidence to athletes and ensuring a single system for all athletes to access.

Any athlete who is to be inducted onto ADAMS will be informed of this by their NGB in the near future. With the importance attached to athlete whereabouts, UK Sport have ensured that the transition to ADAMS will be smooth, comprehensive and athlete focused for all involved.
